Chemical Brothers

DON’T THINK
STARRING THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS
A FILM BY ADAM SMITH
On 26th January 2012, 20 cinemas across 20 cities worldwide will host an exclusive advance screening offering lucky fans the first chance to see Don't Think.

You blink awake and find yourself halfway up the side of a Japanese mountain.
It’s night time, right at the sticky middle point of summer. You’re in an opening in a darkened wood surrounded by – say – 50,000 other revelers, each of them frenzied; delirious from an all-encompassing psychedelia that seems to be emanating from a stage somewhere in the near distance. Above you, lights swoop and strafe across armies of marching toy robots and galloping deconstructed horses; paint balls explode in front of borderline psychotic clowns. You’re in the thick of it, consumed by the spectacle, absorbed into the crowd, surrendering to the noise and the visuals. Stunned by the jaw-dropping intensity of what you’re witnessing, just one thought flashes through your febrile mind.
Don’t Think. Just let it flow.

New Pioneer Traktor Scratch Duo Certified Mixer!!

Hot on the heels of the recent Traktor and Serato MIDI controllers, Pioneer unveils its new DJM T1 and outlines its intentions to dominate the DVS DJ market.

‘ Accidentally’ announced in the recent Traktor 2 software update via its inclusion in the controller preset drop down manager, the DJM T1 is not Pioneers first foray into MIDI included mixers but it is its first to feature such close integration with Native Instruments Traktor workflow.

The DJM T1 is a two channel, audio / digital mixer with on board sound card, two sets of four hotcues / sample buttons, browse function, FX control and play, rewind and nudge buttons that can be used in tandem with existing vinyl and CD time coded vinyl’s or used in solo with a computer connected or using traditional recorded media. It also possesses the functionality to record mixes within the mixer, presumably using the same recording faculty included in previous versions of Traktor software. It also includes at 24 bit D/A convertor in addition to a revised fader and magnetic cross fader construction.

Bundled with Traktor 2 Duo out of the box and costing an estimated £1279 inc. VAT, the Mixer is pricey but considering it comparative cheaper cost when compared to a mixer, CDJs, soundcard and software bundle.

The mixer is exciting because it is the first Pioneer standalone mixer to marry the companies reputable build quality and form factor with the functions contained in Native Instruments software so explicitly.

The question beckons, what is Pioneers intended user base for this mixer, is it for home or club use? It follows the DJM 800 successor, the DJM 900 ‘Nexus’ four channel mixer which whilst being Traktor Scratch certified omits some of the key features which would allow the mixer to operate without time coded vinyl or CDs. This would leave the DJM T1 as a less flexible mixer in terms of being able utilise more channels than its immediate bigger brother, however, it would position it in an enviable position for environments where hot swapping of Windows PCs or Macbooks are common place and standard MIDI mapping are utilised. Would the price be prohibitive to those wishing to use at home and would the lack of extra channels put off club owners looking for a direct replacement to the DJM 800 which is now in its fifth year?

It is clear that Pioneer is making great efforts to monopolise on the increasingly active DVS controller market, however, it would appear that the devices that are being released add further complications for those looking for a unified mixer which leads for the functions and capability of each mixer in the range are frustratingly fragmented. The mixer will be formally demonstrated in the forthcoming Musikmesse in Frankfurt between April 6 to April 9. We wait eagerly to see what this new mixer is capable of.

Russ Chimes - 3 Awesome Videos

I think it's fair to say that the amount of creativity around at the moment means it takes longer to find stuff and sometimes it takes longer than usual to sink in.
So i'm not gonna claim to have 'found' these at all but what I will say is, the more I hear them and the longer I live with them the more I like them.

So, taken from Russ Chimes 'Midnight Ep' check out these 3 amazing videos.
A great idea well executed.
A round of applause for Mr Chimes.

P P P Pete Tong Got Powerrrr.....

Growing up listening to Radio and especially living in the sticks where there was no Dance Music to listen to I have a lot to thank Pete Tong for.
My fondest memory's are of the Essential Mix Live tours.. I remember it being my sole aim to get to one of those as soon as I was allowed!!
When you heard his voice in a club, The noise that followed...that was something special. It was a moment though...times have changed but that'll stay with me.

I taped and cut out the tracklists from Mixmag and i've got those same tapes stored in my parents loft somewhere!
Fair enough to say I didn't think much to the film named after him and believe i've been let down a few times seeing him live but ultimatly out of 20 years work the guy has been awesome and has helped shape and influence my decisions in all aspects of my work.
So it's nice to see Pete Tong get credited with a whole day on Radio 1.
Much deserved and I hope that this isn't a sign off.

Man Jewellery - Soundwave Bracelet!

It’s a custom bracelet of a soundwave rendered in 3D. The bracelet is “designed” by the waveform of the message it encodes. And they’re a deal at $18.(only in U.S tho)

Photobucket

The bracelets are part of the Sound Advice Project, a teen anti-drug abuse initiative, geared at getting parents to talk to their kids. This bit i'm unsure about how it works but it sounds good.
The idea is that, as a parent, you record some message to your child (“Drugs are bad”) and he or she carries that message with them at all times.
Not sure that giving a 3D model of a soundwave is really the most direct way of talking to kids, but it gets points for creativity.

Creamfields is back!  Bigger, better, bolder and with one almighty line up!  The multi-award winning dance festival returns to Daresbury in Cheshire on August Bank Holiday weekend with the biggest electronic line up you’ll see anywhere this year, if beats, basslines and busting dance moves is your tipple then Creamfields is the festival for you.

Selling out in record time last year and attracting record breaking numbers, the original field disco has once again cherry picked the best of the best and secured an array of exclusive performances and headliners for Saturday & Sundays proceedings.

Headlining Saturdays North Stage is The Chemical Brothers, they’re the kings of the block rocking beat, in fact there are few acts who can rival their spellbinding, relentless, euphoric, crowd pleasing performances.   This dance festival exclusive will also be Tom & Ed’s last outdoor show in the UK this year. Returning to host his very own Clublife Stage and back by demand is TiĂ«sto, voted the ‘Greatest DJ Of All Time’ by Mixmag readers and attracting a crowd of over 30,000 last year, expect first rate production and a dance music explosion of epic proportions for this UK Festival Exclusive. Trance devotees unite as the Grammy nominated and globally acclaimed Paul van Dyk returns exclusively to host his very own Evolution Arena, bringing with him a truck load of production for what is set to be a spectacular performance from this dance music heavyweight.

On Sunday we are bringing together two dance titans David Guetta and the Swedish House Mafia.   Following an overwhelming year, we’re excited to welcome back the force du jour that is Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso, this trio have become one of the most sought after DJ crews in the world, their performance in 2010 was deservedly voted BBC Radio 1’s ‘Essential Mix Of The Year’ and they return exclusively to Creamfields to host their own arena for the third year running, only this time in an all new, bigger structure to accommodate the masses who couldn’t get in last year!  Expect a hand’s in the air performance like no other with their trademark blockbuster production.

David Guetta has some of the world’s biggest acts fighting for his production skills and is one artiste that has truly crossed over from the intimate dancefloor to the musical masses, he returns in 2011 with an all new stage show to close out the North Stage.

Last year he was voted the world’s No.1 DJ by DJ Mag so Creamfields is the obvious choice for trance titan Armin van Buuren who enjoyed his performance so much last year he returns exclusively in 2011 to headline and close out the South Stage.

Determined to keep things fresh and exciting, Cream HQ have introduced two new Outdoor Stages, which are needed to house the many headline acts performing this year, they’ve also introduced a flock of new arenas for your pleasure including one of 2010’s biggest artistes Laidback Luke who will be bringing his Super You&Me party to the fields, as he hosts his very own arena – fancy dress essential!   Steve Angello will be giving festival goers a double helping of Swedish delight as he debuts his own Size Matters Arena on the Saturday and returns on Sunday under his Swedish House Mafia moniker.  Techno fans will be pleased to see the return of the Mixmag Presents Cocoon Arena, Sven Väth who celebrates 30 years on the decks this year will be joined by some of the biggest forces in techno including Marco Carola and a very special performance from Josh Wink.  Bass heads and dub-steppers can take sanctuary in the BBC Radio 1Xtra Arena which makes its debut and features the best of the best from the D&B & dubstep stable.  Other arena hosts include Swedish DJ/Producer Eric Prydz who returns with his peers and label mates to host the Pryda Friends Arena for the second year running.  High priestess of the airwaves Annie Mac makes the journey north with a cherry picked line up for her Annie Mac Presents Arena which includes Erol Alkan, Boys Noize, Fake Blood Live, Jack Beats and more.

And it doesn’t stop there, other highlights not to be missed include performances from Calvin Harris who will be making his dj’ing debut at Creamfields, performing alfresco on Saturday and under canvas Sunday.  On Saturday dubstep trio Magnetic Man, join The Chemical Brothers on the North Stage along with one of Urban Music’s breakout stars Katy B, American DJ/Producer and mau5trap signing Skrillex who can claim deadmau5 as one of his biggest fans.   Creamfields favourites and dance music legends who need little introduction Sasha, Pete Tong and special guest Paul Oakenfold all join the bill.   Trance trio Above & Beyond who headline Sunday’s Cream Arena will be joined by the likes of Gareth Emery, Markus Schulz and Adam Sheridan and continuing the sound in the Evolution Arena will be Ferry Corsten, Eddie Halliwell, Judge Jules, John O’Callaghan and Cream resident Gareth Wyn.

Joining Laidback Luke in the Super You&Me Arena will be Wolfgang Gartner, Ed Banger duo Carte Blanche featuring DJ Mehdi and Riton, Sidney Samson, Congorock and more.

French hip hop and electro DJ/Producer Alex Metric, Dirty South, AN21, Benny Benassi and Dave Spoon join Angello for his Size Matters Arena debut, and BBC Radio 1Xtra have snared a very special performance from Digital Soundboy System feat. Shy FX, Breakage, B.Traits with Donaeo, Youngman + Stamina MC.  Expect live performances from London rapper Example and Armin van Buuren collaborator Chicane plus unforgettable performances from the likes of James Zabiela, Afrojack and Joris Voorn, and offering a sanctuary for the lovers of harder beats is the Goodgreef Xtra-Hard Arena which features performances from the likes of Showtek, Lisa Lashes and an exclusive live debut from Organ Donors and providing a more luxurious and pampered ‘festival’ experience we’re pleased to announce that Hed Kandi return as hosts of the Hospitality Arena.  More acts to be announced over the coming weeks.

Creamfields are delighted to have BBC Radio 1 & BBC Radio 1Xtra as this year’s exclusive radio partners; you can hear highlights from the event on both stations the following weekend, and stay tuned to be the first to hear fresh announcements in the run up to the festival - www.bbc.co.uk/radio1 / www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra.

PIONEER CDJ + DJM 350!!

So if like me your wanting to sack off your old gear and get an upgrade you wanna know what your getting before you buy it right?
So technically my set up is 3 CDJ1000’s and a DJM 800 but in my studio it’s a little on the big size.
When PIONEER launched the CDJ350’s I thought that this would be great as I could down size without compromising quality, as the CDJ200’s just were NOT for me! I’m also keen to jump on to USB and start using Rekordbox.

So if you’re like me and a CDJ1000 user I got this from a pioneer spokesman about the difference between a CDJ350 and the CDJ1000s.

'If you are using CDJ 1000Mk2's there will be no quality compromised by using the 350. The 1000MK2 dates back to 2003-2005 and components and build
quality have come a long way since then”

The pioneer spokesman continues

"If you are used to the CDJ 1000 interface size then I would suggest the CDJ 850, 900 or 2000 as these units are more logical multi format upgrades from the 1000 series and all share the same size jog wheel. The 350 is much smaller than the 1000Mk2 and despite the better build quality and multi format playback it won't 'feel' the same.'

This is a great video from Miss Nine. Focus on the Tech people!!

I’m really excited by the USB side of things and did a test loading a track from USB and a track from CD and the USB loaded 4 times faster than the CD! That time in the mix is crucial (if you ever accidently pull out the wrong CD)

Here is some more feedback from Mr. Pioneer Spokesman
“The USB on the DJM 350 is primarily for recording, it enables the user to make live WAV quality recordings of their mixes onto usb key complete with track marks made with the track marker button, it is also very useful to convert your vinyl collection into a high quality digital format.
The USB on the mixer can also be used for playback however the user would be unable to pitch the music up or down to beat mix the content”

I found that information really useful so hopefully you will too.

So to conclude
I reckon I’m gonna get a CDJ 350 to sit along side my CDJ 1000’s MK3.
I am however gonna update my mixer from the DJM800 to the DJM 900 nexus that will retail for £1599 inc VAT and it’s abit of a shame but the DJM 900 nexus will only be available in black.
I’m not usually a fan of 1st generation tech but this system is now tried and tested in the CDJ2000s so I’m in.

THE NEGATIVES
Ok so here’s the bits no one tells you that I could work out…I may stand corrected as I’ve not had it long ;0)

CDJ350
- There’s no brake mode in Vinyl setting (not so bad)
- There’s no reverse
- There’s no hot cue buttons
- The LCD display screen is really small
- There’s no track zoom display

There are however so many other good things that these could easily be forgotten about.

Overall I would fully endorse these CDJS as they replicate the more professional use CDJS really well.
The Jog wheel is key here and it feels and looks sturdier than ever before.
It is essentially a toy version of the CDJ2000, which is no bad thing!

New Pioneer DJ product ‘Nexus’ announced!!

Pioneer are due to announce a new edition to their product line today under the ambiguous name of ‘Nexus’.

Following hot on the heels of the Traktor DDJ-T1 and Serato DDJ-S1 which were recently announced by Pioneer (staking claim to the fast developing MIDI controller and mixer market) the new Nexus, appears at first site to be installed at the pro DJ and club install market whilst opening up the interface for Traktor and Serato users.

The promo is headed up by long time poster child and technical wizz James Zabiela, it gives some brief glimpses of the products top panel, which bares a uncanny resemblance to the DJM 800 along with a touch panel/strip which also appears on their new DDJ-T1 controller and CDJ 2000 alongside well timed USPs on the product.

Today could prove very interesting, Pioneer further acknowledging the increasing use of MIDI and DVS software by DJs alongside more traditional, cylindrical music play back methods. Will the new product help to unify a fragmented and diverse product base currently used by MIDI based DJs or will it join the already bulging collection of MIDI peripherals?

I look forward to seeing what is in store today.

RILEY AND DURRANT

Photobucket

Ahead of the biggest party in LEICESTER next weekend taking place at Superfly
Like-Minded People wanted to find out a little about the guys behind the voices and names
ahead of there headlining slot next week.

So listen to their mix here and read the interview below.. They kind of go 'Hand in Hand'.

Riley & Durrant Nov 2010 Mixtape by rileyanddurrant

QUESTION 1

If you live in Leicester or anywhere up and down the country, you can listen to Andi on Capital, Friday and Saturday Nights.. But put these in order and tell us why?

1. DJing - There’s nothing like the feeling of a rammed out club full of brilliant up-for-it people with an electric atmosphere. It’s having that instant interaction with people and being able to see a big smile come over someones face when you get it right. Best feeling in the world.

2. Radio – The 2nd best feeling is putting the mic fader up and getting that rush of butterflies in your stomach when you think about the fact there’s a potential 50-odd million people who could hear everything you do. We’ve always loved the experimental side of radio to – because you don’t have to keep people dancing, you can play music that’s a bit different and interesting to the ear.

3. Producing – Last but not exactly least – we do love making music, but it’s by far the hardest process and takes the longest to see the fruits of your work. Watching a club full of people go crazy to one of your records or remixes is such a fantastic thing, but often it can take up to a year from when you made something before people hear it.

QUESTION 2

Andi Durrant... you like fast cars! Do you Nick Riley? Who drives to the gigs? Do you still race off the lights?!

Nick: I do like fast cars, but I’m no boy racer like Andi! As his cars are so uneconomical we tend to use my BMW for gigs as its diesel and as Andi is also insured to drive it we share the driving.

Andi: Once a Max Power Chav.. always a Max Power Chav! Since rolling my car into a washing machine repair shop when I was 18 I’ve kept my boy racing to the track and drag strip, but I’m still a major car geek. I just had to sell my old 80s American Camaro IROC because I’m going to hit 30 soon and have 2 babies to carry around now, but yeah.. I still have to have something with a bit of “poke”.

QUESTION 3

If you've never been to Superfly (why not ;0) or seen Riley + Durrant DJ Live (why not ;0), Why should everyone come and see Riley + Durrant at LMPPPresents?

Nick: This is a difficult one to answer without a bit of trumpet blowing, but here goes.. The thing about coming to see us play, is that you never quite know what’s going to come next, we tend to play a lot of different styles and sounds and make loads of exclusive mashups so everthing is always a bit unique and different.

Andi: For some reason, we tend to get asked to play a lot of different types of events.. one week we might be warming up for Tiesto or Paul Van Dyk, the next we’ll be playing with Erick Morillo or Calvin Harris.. then the night after we’ll be in a much more commercial venue, and of course because of the radio we’re lucky to be involved with a lot of different scenes and genres. If someone just wants to go out and have a brilliant night out and her some awesome music – they should come and party with us.

QUESTION 4

Who are your 5 favourite Like-Minded People you like to follow on Facebook or Twitter? Name check them!

Andi: At the risk of sounding like a name dropping nob, I have a lot of good banter with Example (@example) who’s a really nice guy. Sonny Wharton (@SONNYWHARTON) is always interesting and a top bloke, HervĂ© (@hervespace) is often brutally and hilariously honest and Dirty Secretz (@dirtysecretz) are making half the music we play in our shows and sets at the moment.. and they’re from Leicester ;)

QUESTION 5

What's the rest of the year looking like for you both? Records, Gigs, Festivals?? Where can we see you after you play after LMP Presents in Leicester?

Nick: Really good actually - the start of this year has been our best ever. In the first few weeks of 2011 we’ve played some fantastic gigs, remixed the new D Ream record and K Klass track for the Shapeshifters label, and launched the new national Capital FM show across the UK.
Summer is looks like it’s going to be very big, cant go into too much detail but we have just been booked for a legendary UK festival and we have some awesome Ibiza news that will be released over the coming weeks. On the music front, we’ve got an upcoming album project with our new band Backyard Orchestra on CR2 records with the first single being released in a month or so – just waiting on the video being finished. On top of that we’ve got a string of singles ready for our Electrik Playground label and some big remixes coming up too.

Now watch what the guys get up to like when they met Steve Angello + Axwell..

MY MATES ALBUM REVIEW

I'm in the fortunate position of hearing new music quite early and my mates always ask if they can hear the music etc etc. So I ask them to review it
So here is the first in a series of my mates albums reviews!
Everyone..i'd like you to meet 'Tedward'
Just to confirm these are not my thoughts and his only...Agree or disagree..LEAVE A COMMENT
I'm also thinking of letting him loose on the blog..What do you think??!

"So I have been listening to the new Chase & Status album 'No More Idols' and thought I would leave a mini review. Make no mistake this is a bid by the boys for the big time and I am sure they will make some indentation on the top 40 over the coming months. The result is a kaleidoscope of music with a mighty selection of tunes varying from dancehall to dub step and hip-hop to good old drum and bass. There are also plenty of collaborations with stand out tracks including Dizzee Rascal (Heavy) and Ceelo Green (Brixton briefcase).

The flitting from genre to genre works in part. The dancehall 'No Problem' is great, with a brilliant vocal but then there is 'Hypest Hype' which has a ragga vocal over the beats which simply fails to match anything Basement Jaxx has done before them and I have the overall feeling of being short changed. Maybe its just me being a purest and loving the drum and bass that they have done before but by trying so many styles there is no cohesion to the album and its quite a hard listen from beginning to end.

All of that said, this will be the soundtrack to many festival this summer and for some of the tracks I will be jumping up and down like a looney!

Tracklisting:
1. No Problem
2. Fire In Your Eyes (f/ Maverick Sabre)
3. Let You Go (f/ Mali)
4. Blind Faith (f/ Liam Bailey)
5. Fool Yourself (f/ Plan B.)
6. Hypest Hype (f/ Tempa T)
7. Hitz (f/ Tinie Tempah)
8. Heavy (f/ Dizzee Rascal)
9. Brixton Briefcase (f/ Cee-Lo Green)
10. Hocus Pocus
11. Flashing Lights (f/ Sub Focus)
12. Embrace (f/ White Lies)
13. Time – (f/ Delilah & Plan B)
14. Midnight Caller (f/ Clare Maguire)
15. End Credits (f/ Plan B)

Who is the hot act that will take 2011!

Who is gonna be the act or Dj that really takes the title of new Dj of the year in 2011?
I'm making some suggestions of Djs and acts that will really set alight dancefloors this year.
Don't forget we are only talking new Djs (ones you might not have heard of yet)

- Figure
- The Boomzers
- Coin Operated Boy
- Savage Skulls
- Peace Treaty
- Clouds
- Tom Doyle
- Snappa
- CutWires
- The Urchins
- The Squatters
- Hey Today
- Disco Of Doom
- Digital Strut
- Felix Cartal
- Dirty Secretz
- Nihil Young
- Harvard Bass
- Zimo
I'm not hedging bets but you watch these amazing Djs and producers tear the rule book up in 2011.
Who have I missed.
Let me know!

FESTIVALS 2011

So as things look ahead to this year i'm lost as to what festivals I /We /US should be going to?

I've long been a fan of Creamfields and places like Glade and Bestival. I actually went to Bestival for the 1st time last year and I was impressed, but part of me sees you tube clips in the States and in other parts of Europe's festivals and i'm thinking that they are the places to be, but then theres a cost too..

So with all things considered and taking in places that you've been what are the MUST SEE festivals this year and they can be any where in the world!
